Genkai Town is situated in roughly the center of the Higashi Matsuura peninsula, Saga prefecture, in the northwest region of Kyushu. It faces the Genkai Sea and the distant Iki and Tsushima islands to the west, and is surrounded by Karatsu City on the north, east and south sides. The region has been designated the Genkai National Park for the grandeur of the Genkai Sea and the beautiful, rugged coastline.
The water off Genkai Town are also recognized as one of the richest fishing grounds in Japan, thanks to the Tsushima Current. There are many natural reefs here, nurturing marine life including red sea bream, yellowtail and squid, while closer offshore aquaculture is active, yielding red sea bream, blowfish and abalone.
The low mountains in the Uwaba highlands, with elevations of only 100 or 200 meters, show the characteristic undulations they are famed for, overlooking the rich bounty of the flat plain below. The climate is balmy, warmed by the Tsushima Current as it flows north, with the relatively small range in temperature common in marine climates.
